Choosing the Right CCTV Setup
Resolution, storage, lighting and network load — the four decisions that matter most before you buy cameras.

Most CCTV projects go wrong long before installation day. The camera itself is rarely the problem — the planning around it is.
1. Resolution follows distance
A 4MP camera at four metres is excellent. The same camera at twenty-five metres will not give you a readable face. Decide what you need to identify, then measure the distance.
2. Storage is a running cost
Higher resolution and higher frame rates multiply storage. Thirty days of retention on sixteen cameras is a very different purchase to seven days on four.
3. Plan for night, not day
Almost every incident worth reviewing happens in poor light. Test the setup after dark before you sign off on it.
4. Cameras are network devices
An IP camera system is a network project. Budget for switching, cabling and bandwidth from the start.
